The RCMP—commonly known as “The Mounties”—are one of Canada’s most recognizable national symbols, alongside the maple leaf. Established in 1873 by order of Canada’s first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald, the force was originally created to bring law and order to the North-West Territories during Canada’s westward expansion.

In its early years, the Mounted Police played an important role in maintaining peace, supporting new settlements, and helping shape the development of Western Canada. Over time, the force earned an international reputation for professionalism and fairness. Today, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police continues to serve communities across Canada and remains a proud symbol of Canadian history, tradition, and public service.
